PWP Interview Questions: Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner
What questions are asked in a PWP interview?
Expect questions on why the PWP role, your understanding of low intensity, guided self-help approaches for anxiety and depression, assessing and managing risk, working with caseloads and targets, boundaries, diversity and access, and use of supervision. Every panel writes its own questions, so practise the themes, not word-for-word answers.
PWP posts sit in services such as NHS Talking Therapies. Many are trainee posts that include university study. Read the advert for the exact role.
How do you answer PWP questions?
Show warmth, structure and honesty about your limits. Explain that you work with agreed protocols and regular supervision, and that any risk is shared with supervisors straight away.
What do panels look for?
Empathy, communication, resilience, interest in evidence-based approaches, organisation and willingness to learn and to use supervision.
Practice questions with short model answers
These are original practice questions. Use your own experience, not these words.
1. Why do you want to become a PWP?
Model answer: "I want to help people early with practical, evidence-based tools. My experience in a support role showed me how much structured, accessible help can matter. I like the idea of working within clear protocols with regular supervision."
2. What is low intensity work?
Model answer: "Brief, structured support, often guided self-help, for people with mild to moderate anxiety or depression. The practitioner helps the person use the materials and builds skills through short sessions."
3. How would you build rapport in a short first session?
Model answer: "Be warm, explain how the session works, listen, reflect what I hear, check I understand and agree what we will work on together."
4. A client mentions suicidal thoughts. What do you do?
Model answer: "I would stay calm, ask directly and sensitively about their safety, and follow the service's risk protocol, including telling my supervisor straight away. I would not manage this alone and I would record what was said. This answer describes general safe practice and follows service policy."
5. A client tells you about domestic abuse. What do you do?
Model answer: "Listen without judgement, make sure it is safe to continue the conversation, follow the service's safeguarding and domestic abuse procedures, and share with my supervisor. I would give information on specialist support and not put the person at risk."
6. How do you manage a caseload with targets?
Model answer: "Plan the week, keep notes up to date, use supervision to prioritise, and make sure targets never replace good care."
7. A client keeps missing sessions. What do you do?
Model answer: "Contact them kindly, explore barriers such as time or worry, offer flexibility within the service, and discuss in supervision."
8. How would you make the service accessible to different communities?
Model answer: "Listen to individual needs, use interpreters where needed, avoid assumptions, adapt materials and learn about local communities."
9. How do you look after yourself in an emotionally demanding role?
Model answer: "Use supervision and peer support, keep boundaries, take breaks and keep activities outside work."
10. Tell us about a time you received feedback.
Use a real example.
