Dental Nurse Interview Questions and Answers (NHS)

What questions are asked in a dental nurse interview?

Expect questions on why you chose dental nursing, infection prevention and decontamination, supporting anxious patients, consent and confidentiality, safeguarding, medical emergencies, teamwork with dentists and hygienists, and professional standards. Every practice writes its own questions, so practise the themes, not word-for-word answers.

Posts may be in NHS hospital dental services, community services or NHS dental practices. Check the advert for the employer and role.

How do you answer dental nurse questions?

Use real examples, name the safe step, and show you work within your training and your employer's written procedures. Dental nurses in the UK must be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC), and panels like to hear that you know your scope and standards.

What do panels look for?

Calm chairside support, attention to infection control, kindness with nervous patients, reliability and honesty. They also listen for awareness of the GDC Standards for the Dental Team.

Practice questions with short model answers

These are original practice questions, not questions from any real interview. Use your own experience, not these words.

1. Why do you want to be a dental nurse?

Model answer: "I like practical work with people and I enjoy the combination of clinical support and patient reassurance. During work experience I saw how a calm nurse helped an anxious child. I want to build my skills in a team that values training."

2. How do you help a nervous patient?

Model answer: "I would speak calmly, explain what is happening in simple words, check they are comfortable, and make sure the dentist knows they are anxious so we can pause if needed."

3. Talk us through infection prevention in the surgery.

Model answer: "Hand hygiene, correct personal protective equipment, cleaning and disinfecting surfaces between patients, and following our decontamination procedure for instruments. I would follow the written policy every time and report anything that looked wrong."

4. What does consent mean in dentistry?

Model answer: "The patient needs enough information to decide, and must agree freely. The dentist leads the discussion, and I support by checking the patient understands and by recording what I am asked to. If a patient looks confused or unsure, I would tell the dentist."

5. A child attends and you are worried about neglect. What do you do?

Model answer: "I would not question the child or family in a way that could harm any investigation. I would record exactly what I saw and heard and tell the practice safeguarding lead straight away, following our policy and the local safeguarding process."

6. A patient collapses in the chair. What do you do?

Model answer: "Call for help immediately, stay with the patient and support the team under our medical emergency procedure. I would fetch the emergency equipment and follow the team leader's instructions within my training. Afterwards I would help with documentation."

7. How do you protect confidentiality?

Model answer: "I only discuss patients with those involved in their care, keep records closed and screens locked, and do not talk about patients outside work."

8. Tell us about a time you made a mistake.

Use a real example. Say what happened, how you told your supervisor, how you put it right and what you changed.

9. How do you work with the dentist and the wider team?

Model answer: "I prepare the surgery, anticipate what is needed, communicate clearly and pass on anything the patient tells me that the dentist should know."

10. How do you keep your skills up to date?

Model answer: "I complete required continuing professional development, ask for feedback, attend training and keep a learning log. I would raise gaps in supervision."
