District and Community Nurse Interview Questions (NHS)

What questions are asked in a community or district nurse interview?

Expect questions on lone working, managing a caseload, long-term conditions and wound care, palliative and end-of-life care, mental capacity, safeguarding and self-neglect, working with families and carers, and coordinating with GPs and other services. Every panel writes its own questions, so practise the themes, not word-for-word answers.

How do you answer community nursing questions?

Show organised, independent but safe practice. Explain how you assess risk, prioritise visits, escalate, communicate and record. Mention supervision and team support.

What do panels look for?

Autonomy with good judgement, calm decision making, respect for people in their own homes, strong communication and understanding of the Mental Capacity Act and safeguarding.

Practice questions with short model answers

These are original practice questions. Use your own experience, not these words.

1. Why do you want to work in the community?

Model answer: "I like seeing the whole person in their own setting and working alongside families. I enjoy planning my day and building long relationships, with a team to call on."

2. How do you prioritise a caseload when a visit overruns?

Model answer: "I would phone the base, tell the team, and prioritise time-critical visits such as insulin or end-of-life care. Someone may cover the others. I would tell affected patients and document what happened."

3. How do you stay safe when lone working?

Model answer: "I follow the lone worker policy: share my visit list, check in as agreed, assess the risk before entering, have a way to call for help and leave if I feel unsafe."

4. A patient refuses treatment. What do you do?

Model answer: "I presume they have capacity unless there is reason to doubt it. I would explore their reasons, give clear information, respect a capacitous decision and record it. If I doubted capacity I would carry out and record an assessment under the Mental Capacity Act for that decision and involve the team."

5. You find an older person living in poor conditions who declines help. What do you do?

Model answer: "I would build trust, check capacity for the decisions involved, talk to the person about what matters to them and discuss with my team and safeguarding lead. Self-neglect is covered by the Care Act in England, and I would follow the local procedure."

6. How would you support someone at the end of life at home?

Model answer: "I would ask about their wishes, involve the GP and palliative care team, make sure anticipatory medicines are prescribed and in the home, and support the family. I administer only what has been prescribed and follow the plan."

7. A syringe driver alarm sounds during a visit. What do you do?

Model answer: "Follow the training and the trust's policy: check the device and the patient, take the safe steps I am trained for, and ring the team or out-of-hours service if I cannot resolve it. I record what happened."

8. How do you work with carers who are exhausted?

Model answer: "I acknowledge their effort, ask what they need, signpost to carers' assessments and respite, and share concerns with the team."

9. Tell us about a time you worked with other services to improve care.

Use a real example with GP, therapist, social care or voluntary sector.

10. What support would you want as a new community nurse?

Model answer: "A structured induction, shadowing, a named supervisor and regular reflection. I would ask for training in anything I had not done."
