NHS Band 2 Interview Questions and Answers
What questions are asked in an NHS Band 2 interview?
Expect questions on why you want to work in a hospital, reliability and time-keeping, teamwork, treating patients with kindness and respect, infection control, confidentiality, manual handling and what you would do in an emergency. Every panel writes its own questions, so practise the themes, not word-for-word answers.
Band 2 is a grade on Agenda for Change, the NHS pay and grading system. Typical roles include porters, domestic and catering staff and some entry-level healthcare support roles. Duties differ, so read the job description.
How do you answer Band 2 questions?
Give simple, honest examples from work, school, volunteering or home life. Show you are reliable, friendly and safe, and that you ask when unsure.
What do panels look for?
Reliability, a positive attitude, respect for patients and colleagues, willingness to follow procedures and to learn. Many employers refer to the Care Certificate for support staff.
Practice questions with short model answers
These are original practice questions. Use your own experience, not these words.
1. Why do you want to work in the NHS?
Model answer: "I want a job that helps people every day, even if I am not giving direct care. I am reliable, I like being active and I want to be part of a team that matters."
2. Why are you right for this role?
Model answer: "I turn up on time, I work well in a team and I stay calm when it is busy. I have done physical work before and I am happy to be trained."
3. How do you treat patients who are anxious or confused?
Model answer: "I smile, introduce myself, speak clearly and gently, and tell a nurse if I am worried. I never rush them."
4. What would you do if a patient asked you for medical advice?
Model answer: "I would explain kindly that I cannot advise and find a nurse or the right person to help."
5. How do you help prevent infection?
Model answer: "I wash or gel my hands as required, wear the right protective equipment, clean as trained and report spillages or anything unclean."
6. What would you do if you saw a hazard such as a wet floor?
Model answer: "Put up a warning sign, deal with it or report it straight away and make sure nobody is at risk."
7. What would you do if a patient collapsed in front of you?
Model answer: "Stay with them, call for help using the emergency procedure for the site, and follow instructions from the clinical team. The emergency number varies by hospital, so I would learn it at induction."
8. How do you keep information confidential?
Model answer: "I do not discuss patients outside work or in public areas and I only share information with those who need it."
9. Tell us about a time you worked as part of a team.
Use a real example. Say what you did, how you helped and the result.
10. How would you handle being asked to do a task by two people at once?
Model answer: "I would tell both what the other asked, then check with the person in charge which is the priority."
