NHS Band 3 Interview Questions and Answers
What questions are asked in an NHS Band 3 interview?
Expect questions on your care or support experience, working within your role, dignity and communication, reporting changes in a patient's condition, teamwork, confidentiality and reliability. Every panel writes its own questions, so practise the themes, not word-for-word answers.
Band 3 is a grade on Agenda for Change, the NHS pay and grading system. Typical Band 3 posts include some healthcare assistant and support worker roles, but duties differ. Read the job description rather than relying on the band.
How do you answer Band 3 questions?
Give real examples, show you know the limits of your role, and name the person you would tell. Where the post involves more responsibility than entry level, show examples of being relied on, such as supporting new colleagues or carrying out tasks you have been trained and signed off for.
What do panels look for?
Compassion, reliability, good observation, honest reporting, willingness to learn and respect for boundaries. Many employers refer to the Care Certificate standards and the Code of Conduct for healthcare support workers.
Practice questions with short model answers
These are original practice questions, not questions from any real interview. Use your own experience, not these words.
1. Why are you applying for a Band 3 post?
Model answer: "I have a year of experience supporting patients with daily care and I am ready to take on more, such as taking observations once trained. I like being part of a team and I want to keep learning."
2. What tasks have you carried out that you were trained and signed off for?
Use a real example. Name the training, supervision and the point you reported to a nurse.
3. You notice a patient's breathing has changed. What do you do?
Model answer: "I would stay with the patient, make sure they are comfortable and tell the registered nurse straight away. I would pass on what I saw. I would not decide what is wrong and I would record what I did."
4. How do you make sure observations are accurate?
Model answer: "I use equipment that has been checked, follow the training I received, repeat anything that looks odd and report unusual results straight away."
5. How do you support a patient who is confused?
Model answer: "I stay calm, use their name, speak simply, keep the environment familiar and involve the nurse if they are at risk or distressed. I protect their dignity."
6. How do you work with new or less experienced colleagues?
Model answer: "I show them how I do things, explain why, answer questions and tell the nurse in charge if I think they need more support."
7. What would you do if you were asked to do something outside your role?
Model answer: "I would politely say it is outside my training, explain what I can do and ask who is the right person."
8. How do you handle a complaint from a relative?
Model answer: "I would listen, show I understand it is worrying, avoid arguing and bring in the nurse in charge. I would pass on the details accurately."
9. Tell us about a time you had to cope with pressure.
Use a real example. Cover what was happening, how you prioritised, whom you asked for help and the result.
10. What does the Care Certificate mean to you?
Model answer: "It is a set of standards that shows what good, safe care looks like for support staff. I use it as a checklist for my own practice, such as privacy and dignity, communication and duty of care."
