What questions are asked in a mental health nurse interview?

Expect questions on why mental health nursing, recovery and person-centred care, risk assessment, de-escalation, the Mental Health Act, self-harm, safeguarding, working with families and teams, and looking after your own wellbeing. Every panel writes its own questions, so practise the themes, not word-for-word answers.

How do you answer mental health nursing questions?

Show warmth, curiosity and safe practice. Explain how you build rapport, assess risk, use the least restrictive option and involve the person in their care. Follow local policy and escalate.

What do panels look for?

Compassion, calm under pressure, respect, boundaries, reflective practice and awareness of the NMC Code and legal frameworks.

Practice questions with short model answers

These are original practice questions. Use your own experience, not these words.

1. Why do you want to be a mental health nurse?

Model answer: "I am interested in helping people recover and live well. A placement showed me how listening without judgement can change how a person engages. I want to work in a team that values recovery."

2. What does recovery mean to you?

Model answer: "Recovery is personal. It means supporting someone to build a life they find meaningful, whether or not symptoms remain, by working on their goals."

3. A patient is becoming agitated on the ward. What do you do?

Model answer: "Stay calm, keep a safe distance, use a low tone, listen, offer choices and reduce stimulation. I would call for support early and follow the trust's de-escalation and restrictive practice policies. Any use of force must be a last resort, proportionate and recorded in line with the law and policy."

4. How do you assess risk to self?

Model answer: "I ask directly and sensitively, use the trust's risk assessment tools alongside my judgement, involve the team, record the plan and review it. I never keep a concern about safety to myself."

5. A patient tells you a secret about self-harm and asks you not to tell. What do you do?

Model answer: "I explain kindly that I cannot promise to keep safety concerns secret, listen, and share with the team as needed so the person gets support. I record it."

6. What do you know about the Mental Health Act?

Model answer: "It is the law that allows people to be assessed and treated for mental disorder without consent in certain circumstances, with safeguards and rights of appeal. I follow the Code of Practice and the trust's policy, and make sure patients are told of their rights."

7. How do you involve families and carers?

Model answer: "With the person's consent where possible, I listen to families, share what I can, and signpost to carer support. I respect confidentiality."

8. How do you manage a patient who refuses medication?

Model answer: "I explore why, offer information and alternatives, respect decisions made with capacity, and report to the team. If a patient is detained and treatment is authorised under law, I follow the legal framework and policy."

9. How do you look after your own wellbeing?

Model answer: "Clinical supervision, reflective practice, peer support, boundaries and activities outside work."

10. Tell us about a time you worked in a multidisciplinary team.

Use a real example with a psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker or occupational therapist.
